Synopsis
Setting: Ploverleigh, England during the Late 19th Century
Act I: Exterior of Sir Marmaduke’s Mansion, Mid-day
Act II: The Same, Midnight
The village rings with the preparations for the betrothal ceremony of Aline, the daughter of Lady Sangazure, to Alexis, son and heir of Sir Marmaduke Pointdextre. Within the village are several other romances waiting to flower including between Mrs Partlet’s Daughter, Constance, and the vicar as well as between Sir Marmaduke and Lady Sangazure. Alexis is determined that all should share in his experience of love and enlists the services of John Wellington Wells, a family sorcerer, to provide a love potion which he plans to secretly administer to the company during the celebratory tea party. Unfortunately, matters do not proceed as expected and it takes a second act of magic to set things right and restore everyone to their rightful partners.
